How do you teach a soccer player to get the slide tackle earlier or get a baseball player to reach the base faster or a football player to out-sprint his opponent? This course was designed to give you the skills to understand where speed comes from and how to train to improve it. Speed training is about much more than just sprinting and completing drills. It takes specific training done with the right timing, intensity and focus to get game-changing results. Coach Harnden shares his philosophies for training speed in any sport.
Stride length multiplied by stride frequency equals speed. In this chapter, Coach Harnden explains how to achieve the optimal stride length through technique and how to train to increase stride frequency. These skills must become ingrained so the reaction process during a game is executed with muscle memory. The only way to achieve this is through training correctly and regularly outside of the game.
Coach Ken Harnden shares how to start training for speed and how to progress through a season. He provides examples of a training schedule so you can get the most out of your speed work. Whether you are training for explosiveness, power or endurance, an athlete must work towards increasing speed without getting injured. Prior to beginning any training, it’s crucial to warm-up your muscles, joints and nervous system to handle the workout ahead. When an athlete moves on the court or the field, it’s critical to get into the proper position to sprint so no speed is lost in the first step. In this lesson, you’ll learn some great resistance and rotational drills to ensure sprint mechanics are engrained and natural during the game.
Some of the worst injuries in sport occur when the center of mass is not in-sync with the movement of the legs and feet. This lesson covers movement drills using a line and cones to practice quick lateral movement while maintaining the proper positions for speed.

A baseball player has to sprint to the next base, a football or soccer player has to follow an opponent or out-sprint their defender and a tennis player has to quickly move toward the ball. When an athlete has to change direction on the field or court, the first step makes the biggest difference. In this chapter, you’ll learn the fundamental requirements of drills that work change of direction while keeping the athlete safe.
